ANTHEA STEAD

Anthea Stead is an artist who lives and works from her home in the small coastal town of Wombarra, nestled under the Illawarra Escarpment.

After graduating with a BA in Visual Communication from Sydney College of the Arts, Anthea worked for 15 years as a graphic designer and a published illustrator, both in Australia and the UK before turning to painting full time in 2014.

Her paintings often reflect her local environment, from the backdrop of the escarpment to the  rainforest below and down to the sea.

'Forest to the Sea' is that journey. Her aim is for the viewer to go on this journey with her. It starts from her home which is surrounded by forest ('Listen to the Trees" & 'Forest is alive') and continues through the landscape down via two roads( 'Road to the Sea I', 'Road to the sea II') and finally arrives at several of her favourite views along the coastline ('To the sea', 'End of the road', 'View from the top).

Besides painting, she also produces intricate works on paper using acrylics, inks and collage and was recently a finalist in Wollongong Gallery's Flow Contemporary Art Prize and People's Choice winner of Thirroul Seaside festival 2019.
