Mitchell English is a mid-career artist with an extensive professional practice. He’s shown extensively at home and abroad. His work is held in private and public collections including the Sydney Powerhouse Museum, Bannisters Hotel Group and Bega Regional Gallery.

As an artist and avid surfer, he’s made a point of never living more than walking distance to the sea. His paintings speak of time wasted beautifully in search of the perfect wave. His home and studio are but a short distance to some of those perfect waves in Noosa Heads, Australia.

My recent body of work explores the human figure in the coastal landscape. I’m looking not only at how we experience the beach, but how we move and behave and feel because of our connection to and time spent at the beach.

Here, that movement and connection have a particular quality, for in Australia, the beach is the ultimate egalitarian space. It’s free; open to all. Not only are we free to surf or while away the hours at the beach, we’re also able to sit amongst all societal and economic levels. We are free from the limitations and restrictions of a class system. Free to simply be.
