Sally Barling

“My work is a celebration of creativity drawn with a free spirit and an open mind. I find inspiration from organic forms, colours and patterns - sometimes found nestled within nature’s hand, sometimes a distillation of a moment, an experience or a memory. ”

Sally is originally from London UK and is currently based in Brisbane QLD.

“I was born into an artistic family and with these roots I feel inspired to create my own style and freely follow my intuition. I am compelled into creative expression as a way to collate and celebrate life experiences-it is a source of pure joy and energy.

I have been painting for over a decade and think of my work as an unfolding of discovery and evolution. For me painting is oxygen-a vital meditative immersion where cognitive thought is suspended to make way for intuition and spontaneous expression.

My palette is most often minimal bringing a sense of elegant simplicity and lightness and yet grounded with richly textured layers.  I work in mixed media weaving threads of pattern through textured layers. Some paintings resolve quickly others can linger in a careless state of imbalance until the hidden marks within emerge-an element, a remnant, a symbolic form, a purpose or a question to be considered and explained-this can unlock the essence of the painting.

Over time I’ve learnt not to hurry along the process and have developed the confidence to understand when a painting is complete.

Past works can inform or offer a point of reference but instead of adhering too closely to what I’ve produced before, each new work takes me on the next journey of exploration. I let the painting tell me which path it wants to follow”.
